Thank You for a Successful Year!

2009 was definitely not a good year to be in the retail business.  Yes, yes, we know that's hardly a news flash and it's not the cheeriest way to start off a newsletter.  But we are cheery here because we can say that despite the odds, we've had a successful year at Cat & Mouse, and we owe it all to wonderful customers like YOU!

In 2009 we were able to increase the variety of games & puzzles in the store, we've hired people like Peter and Beth who can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about board games, and we've been able to participate in and help organize a variety of community events.  None of this would have been possible without a lot of help from our great suppliers, our fellow retailers who refer customers, and the media folks who kindly feature us in print and on video.  Most importantly, it wouldn't have happened without the support of our enthusiastic and beloved customers.  Thank you one and all - We look forward to seeing you in 2010!

New Release Highlights

  • We have lots of great new strategy releases like Vasco de Gama, Strada Romana, Carson City, Valdora, Day & Night, and Opera.

  • Power $truggle - Peter gives this game two thumbs up!

  • Piece o' Cake - An intriguing and quick little strategy game for 2-5 players.

  • Jaipur - I love, love, love this new 2-player card game, and it's not just because of the pink box insert and the camels.  If you like Battle Line, you definitely need to check it out!

  • Robo Rally - The classic is back in print!

  • Duck Duck Safari! - Here's one for the kids; it  includes 6 rubber duckies and rules for 5 different games.

Other Inventory Updates:   Dixit will be back in stock next week in very limited quantities, but Cornerstone will not be back in stock until February.  And no, Dungeon Lords still does not have a firm release date, but if you want a copy we highly recommend pre-ordering it, since copies of the first print run will go fast.

Board Games in the News

  • Cat & Mouse Game Store was featured on WCIU Channel 26.

  • WBEZ's Worldview did a show on gaming that featured Jay Tummelson from Rio Grande Games.  It's a nice introduction to what European-style strategy games are all about.

  • The Wall Street Journal (yes, you read that right) featured Settlers of Catan and the people playing it at an executive retreat.

Settlers of Catan Tournaments

Are you feeling a little competitive?  Do you want a chance to win a trip to GenCon 2010 in Indy?  If you answered 'yes' to either of these questions, then join us in January and February when we'll be hosting a series of Settlers of Catan tournaments.  These tournaments are sanctioned by Mayfair Games, and the winner of the series will win a trip to GenCon, where they'll compete in a national Catan tournament.  Check out our web site for tournament details.

Discover the Ancient Strategy Game of Go

Go is the 2-player game know for its simple rules but strategic depth and complexity.  We're bringing back our Sunday afternoon Go events (1st Sunday of every month), and we invite you to join us for an afternoon playing the game that Andre says is the only one he'd ever need on a desert island!  If you've never played before we're happy to teach you, and we have plenty of sets on hand, so there's no need to bring your own.  The next Go event is on Sunday, January 3 starting at 2 pm.
