Euro Game Tournaments - Dominion and Agricola

Players competing in February's Race for the Galaxy TournamentThis Saturday we're hosting our second tournament, and up this time is Dominion.   All players will play two 4-player games, then we'll narrow the field down to 8 players for the semi-final round, then down to the final four.  During each round all tables will be playing with the same deck combination.  Scott Tepper (columnist for boardgamenews.com, demoer for Rio Grande and all-around nice guy) has designed 4 different combos for us so each game will present a new challenge for the players.

Players who make it to the final four will win store gift certificates as well as some special prizes.  RSVP's are required, and only 2 seats are left for the tournament, so if you'd like to participate, contact the store now at 773-384-4454 or linda@cat-n-mouse.com to reserve a spot.  More details about the event are available on our event calendar

In April we'll be hosting an Agricola tournament, but this one will work a little differently.  Because Agricola is a longer game, we'll host qualifying rounds prior to the final tournament on Saturday, April 18th.  We'll announce the details about the tournament in our next newsletter and post them on our web site soon!

Spring Has Sprung!

Well, not really, but Tuesday's warm weather has me eagerly anticipating two things I love about Spring: playing outside and getting out of town for Spring Break.

Outdoor Games - As much as we love playing games indoors, we also love to play games outside, and so next month we'll start stocking lots of fun games to keep the fun going as the weather warms up.  We'll have Frisbees, Trac Ball, beanbag toss, jump ropes, Bocce, Jarts, a variety of balls, and more.  So whether you're on your way to the park or planning your first barbeque of the season, be sure to stop by and pick up something fun for outside!

Travel Games - In early April we're packing up the kids and heading out of town for a few days, and for us selecting the games to bring gets more consideration than selecting the clothes.   The games need to be small enough so that all of them together can fit in one backpack, and they should provide a lot of variety with regard to difficulty level and play time.  We need games & activities for the car, games for the whole family during down-time in the hotel room, and of course some games for the adults for when we get tired of paying attention to the kids!   So here's what I'm thinking of bringing on our trip:

  • For the car - Six hours in the car means we'll need lots to keep us busy!
    • Classic Auto Bingo cards
    • Activity books for the kids - Mazes and Battleship puzzles for Cyrus, word search puzzles and the awesome Monkeying Around dot-to-dots for Milo
    • Go Mental FUNdamental card box - Go Mental is the fun knowledge game produced by Chicago's own HL Games, and Cyrus in particular gets a big kick out of the fact-filled cards.
    • Would You Rather  - This game basically asks would you rather do gross/weird thing A or gross/weird thing B, and it's the perfect game for boys!  As with Go Mental, we leave the board at home and just use the question cards when traveling.
  • For kids & adults to play together
    • Travel Abalone - A classic 2-player strategy game in a small travel format
    • Ruckus - A zippy card-snatching game that both of our kids always enjoy
    • For Sale - A bidding card game that's great for the whole family or as a light filler for adults
    • Terra Nova - This strategy board game comes in a small box and gives us something a little meatier to play with the kids
  • For the adults
    • Genji - This 2008 release from Z-Man packs a lot of strategy and backstabbing fun into a small box
    • Colossal Arena - One of my favorite in Fantasy Flight's series of small box games, this game of gladiatorial mayhem is always a hit.

What's New in the Store

  • Strategy Games - Bonnie & Clyde, Name of the Rose, Age of Conan, Catan Geographies: Germany, Carcassonne Big Box, Zombiegeddon
  • Dungeons & Dragons - Players Handbook 2 and Players Handbook Power Cards
  • Family / Party Games - Archeology card game, Ruin, Kimaloe, Curses!, Theories trivia game

Recent News & Reviews

  • Check out the great video overview of Formula D, on Board Games with Scott.  Don't forget that the new Chicago map expansion for Formula D is in store now.  We'll also be demoing the game in the store on Saturday, April 4 at 1:00 pm.
  • From an article about board games on Bloomberg.com: "Staying in is the new going out."  Validation for homebodies everywhere!

Good Games That Teach - Early Learning Skills

This month we're featuring the Bright Idea line of card games from Playroom Entertainment.  Each of these card games focuses on an early learning skill such as memory, rhyming, counting, matching, beginning word sounds, left and right, or colors.  What we like best about this series is that they teach basic skills and are engaging enough that they don't drive parents nuts.  Trust us - this is a rare combination!   Each game costs only $9.99, and if you have children in the 4-7 year-old range, you should definitely have a few of the Bright Idea games in your collection.

Good Stuff for Educators

ALA Toolkit - The American Library Association has recently come out with The Librarian's Guide to Gaming.  This online toolkit includes resources, tips, and best practices, and is a great jumping off point for anyone interested in using games effectively in schools.

Win Games from Out of the Box! - Out of the Box (publisher of the 10 Days series, Backseat Drawing, My Word! and other great games) is giving $100 worth of games to whoever posts the best story about using games in education on the Games For Educators web site.  The contest deadline is 5/1/09.
